Measures to Take to Ensure Safety from Future Earthquakes (in order of priority)
- Put in place a plan of action in case another earthquake strikes. This action plan should tell people what to do if they are caught (a) in a single story building, (b) in a multistory building, (c) out in the open and (d) in a vehicle. It should be printed on posters and stuck in public places, work areas and schools. Along with the action plan, earthquake drills need to be put into practice in schools and workplaces so that the general public do not panic too if another earthquake hits.
- A team of experts should be employed by the government to supervise the rebuilding of all the buildings in Haiti. They should establish a set of guidelines (to make sure that the buildings survive a second earthquake) that all new buildings must abide by before they're built.
- Set up a warning system modeled off the one now used in Japan. It is a system of 4 235 seismographs set up around the country. If at least 2 of these seismographs are set off by a tremor, a signal is sent out to every TV set and radio. They turn on and broadcast the news. A message is also sent out to every phone, warning them of the impending quake. This means that the residents of Haiti that receive these warnings will know to evacuate the building that they are currently in. This is of the utmost importance because if people aren't inside building then they can't get crushed under the debris.
